About Stephanie De Haven
I am a freelance poet, writer, editor, and educator. I specialize in American Southern Gothic Lit and Women's Lit. I write books, poems, and short fiction that changes lives. I have performed to packed rooms. I started my life in poverty, and now that I am educated, I am continuing my life in a gentile poverty.
My current projects include: a collection of poems and short stories from the perspectives of supernatural creatures displaced by Hurricane Katrina, a book of pagan/Wiccan poems for all the sabbats and esbats, and a small-scale press dedicated to offering at-cost printing of chapbooks for the underserved.
My current goal is a PhD in English with Creative Dissertation from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette.
Exodus Under Glass
Where is the pride
for the poor child Chosen
to play the glass bead game?
What is the dowry
for the learned girl-child
from a place where men
are MEN, and women
Slant it stupid and yielding?
The MEN are too busy to read
and the women too Slanted
to remember that the world once
worshiped their wisdom.
My work will never be read, but
dusted or laid in cold cedar
chest and cooed over for company.
If read, the hard words skipped
the harsh parts skipped
my own heart skipped
because their world has no use
for the female Magister Ludi
for the glass beads
for the hard parts
for me.
I can never go home.
