About Silvia Marquez Pease
As an Assistant Professor in Graphic Design and Electronic Media in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Miami, I taught Undergraduate and Graduate courses in my expertise. Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Design courses, Design Portfolio, Animation and Web design.
My approach to design education is informed by my professional design experience of 29 years. In particular, I am interested in promoting interdisciplinary practices where concept and critical theory are influenced by current technology and fine arts. My classes are mini replicas of my design studio, where students are encourage to conceptualize, create, and meet deadlines in a supportive environment. All classes are prepared digitally and posted on the Blackboard site, allowing students to review the daily lecture from home. Students post their work to a class blog for review or comments. http://www.91designs.com
My research focuses on web-based media technology, interactivity, and new media interface applied to fine arts and design. I have been working on visual communication systems, branding, posters, and websites for selected organizations (Alamo Rent A Car, Selecciones Reader’s Digest, Lufthansa Cargo, Guggenheim Partners, Pinta Art Fair in New York and London, Issac Daniels, Cacique International, Dr. Flor Mayoral), and non-profits (American Cancer Society, SWAF international, CANA, Flying Samaritans).
Part of the success of the PINTA branding project was my careful attention to detail and the consistency in the design philosophy throughout. I originally created the PINTA brand for the first fair in November 2007, which was held in New York. Each year since, I have redesigned the brand keeping the continuity, but with a “fresh look” and a new metallic color. In 2008, I focused on the website, developing a very effective
(behind the scenes) module system to easily update the site. In 2009; I had a greater challenge of preparing for two fairs: Pinta New York and Pinta London.
I have also been working on site-specific installations, photography and video art; my work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. I have created the portfolio class, sponsored student exhibits and print-shop workshops, restructured the graphic design curriculum, and implemented a new approach to teaching that emphasize IT literacy. I was the recipient of the University of Miami, College of Arts and Science’s Summer Award in 2005; and, the University of Miami General Research Award in 2006 and in 2009. In 2008, I received a gold award in branding design and two silver awards in branding and packaging design at the XPOSED2008 juried graphic design competition from AIGA- the American Institute of Graphic Arts.
As I have done during my career, I will continue making a valuable contribution to the design community, photography, 2d-3d design, and the research of web interactivity programs.
