Seeking what I can learn from other people, cultures, governance and circumstances. Making myself available. Realizing that people and communities have all they need from within to overcome issues and improve their quality of life, and assisting them to draw and build on what they have. Building community capacity is easy when you identify that the community already has capacity. by partnering and offering a "hand up" we unlock and empower the already existing (dormant) ability the community has to identify their strengths that poverty and sometimes poor governance has overshadowed. Being closely involved in a partnership and spending time immersed with the community of Korando in Rural Kenya, where basic commodities such as food water, education and health care are scarce but people, hospitality and community cohesion is important, has caused me to reflect and re-evaluate my own priorities. I am inspired and driven by the desire these people (who live in abject poverty) have to want to improve their quality of life. I have committed myself to being part of the solution by working closely with them, assisting them to identify their issues priorities them and ultimately find their own sustainable solutions. intersectoral collaboration and continually networking with other agencies government and non government bodies both in Australia and Kenya (and globally) has also been invaluable in sharing, learning and empowering. Over the last 9 years of my partnership with Korando, we have seen great results as the community are encouraged to write proposals for sustainable income generating schemes, water proposals, proposals for a local health clinic, education and so much more. Reading the written proposals that the community have put together themselves is inspiring as the elements for long term sustainability are present. We only need sponsors to fund these proposals and we will see sustainable progress improved quality of life and a community encouraged to live in the knowledge that that have what it takes.
