About John O'Brien
I was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease in 1998. I then set about looking for a commercially available gluten-free beer becasue, along with bread, pizza and pasta, this would be the thing I would miss the most from my diet.
I quickly discovered that there was no commercial gluten-free beer consistently available in Australia. I then set about researching beer production to see if I could make my own gluten-free beer at home.
After many long days and many late nights in the back shed at home, the beer started to become drinkable, even to the point where people without a gluten intolerance enjoyed it.
I then started turning my attention to looking at the commercial viability of producing a gluten-free beer and my marketing research found that there was a need in the market for such a product.
O'Brien Brewing Pty Ltd was formed, capital was raised and commercial production trials commenced in 2004. We released O'Brien Pale Ale, Australia's first gluten-free beer, on 11 August 2005.
We then released O'Brien Premium Lager and won an international award for this gluten-free beer at a UK beer festival in 2006. We have won many awards since.
We purchased our own brewery, having previously had our beer produced under contract, in 2007 and released O'Brien Brown Ale soon after. We are currently planning to release the world's first fully brewed low alcohol gluten-free beer.
