About Agshin Mehdiyev

I joined the diplomatic service in September 1975, have served both during the Soviet period and the independent Republic of Azerbaijan.

From 1971 to 1975 I served at the USSR Embassy in Arab Republic of Egypt (assistant to the counsellor for economic affairs). In the course of my career I served, inter alia, as attaché and second secretary of the USSR Embassy in the Republic of Yemen (1977-1982), at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan SSR (1982-1985), Consul-General, Counsellor, Director of Foreign Policy Division of the USSR Embassy in the Democratic Republic of Yemen (1987-1991), Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Yemen (1991-1992).

I was the Director of Europe, USA and Canada Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1993-2001).

I served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe (2001-2006).

I have been serving as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations since November, 2006.

I am also Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Cuba, Venezuela and Jamaica (non-resident).  

I am the author of numerous articles and other publications in the field of international affairs and political studies. I studied issues related to Islam and have a number articles on Zaydizm and Ismailism in Islam.

 

I am married and have three children.

I speak three foreign languages – English, Arabic and Russian
