About Mary Asikas
Mary has extensive experience (27 years) in schools as a teacher and leader (R-12) in South Australia. She has held leadership positions at all levels of the public education system including various District Offices, Central Office and Support Services within the South Australian Department of Education and Community Services (DECS). Mary was the South Australian President of the Australian College of Educators.
Mary’s leadership roles within DECS have included:
· Student Management Consultant with the Adelaide South Support Services
· Recruitment Officer and Promotions Manager in Central Office
· District Coordinator Schools – Fleurieu District
· Principal Seaford 6-12 School and Hallett Cove School R-12
· Innovations & e-Learning Program Manager – future SACE Office
Mary’s challenge has been to transform schools so they can incorporate the new dimensions and learning available for the 21st Century learner and also how innovation is enabled. Mary’s innovation explores how a school can think differently about the way a distributive leadership model can work with people and construct organisational systems needed for innovation to transform the school from a commonly known 20th century model.
Mary’s effective leadership skills have lead her to achieve successful whole school reform to significantly improve student learning outcomes. This has been acknowledged both at a state and national level with Seaford 6-12 School winning a number of schooling awards including the Australian Government Quality Schooling Awards in 2007 & 2008, and the Australian Awards for Teaching Excellence in 2009. Also in 2009, Seaford 6-12 school won a National Schools First Award.
Mary is an advocate for lifelong learning and has completed her Master in Educational Leadership and Management. Mary was successful in winning a scholarship to undertake her ‘Doctorate of Education’ in 2009. Mary is recognized as an outstanding teacher and has been accredited in SA as an Advanced Skills Teacher.
Mary is often approached to present nationally and at universities to share her work and achievements as a successful principal. She is regarded highly in the international arena, and has been invited by a number of international educationalists and consultants to present, design programs, and work with leaders and educators at international events concerning educational trends and issues.
In 2009, Mary became a fellow of the Australian College of Educators in recognition of her significant contributions to education in South Australia. Mary was also recognized as a leader who is committed to transcending the barriers of traditional school environments to ensure the needs of all students are addressed with specific attention to those of disadvantaged groups. Mary has also been awarded an Educational Leadership Medal from the Australian Council of Educational Leaders.
