About Deborah Booros
DEBORAH L. BOOROS was born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where her father was a crane operator at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation for 40 years, and her mother was a sewing machine operator for 30 years. Debbie has one older sister who works as a microbiologist for the City of Allentown.
After graduating from Dieruff High School, Debbie attended Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago, Illinois, and earned her license as a Dental Assistant in 1972. She retuned home and worked in the dental field for twelve years.
In 1975 Debbie married her husband, Jim, who is a professional golfer. She took advantage of an opportunity to spend more time with him when he took over the operation of the Allentown Municipal Golf Course as its head golf professional. She left the dental field and became manager of the golf facility.
This career change would provide an additional benefit. With Jim playing on the PGA tour for 10 years, Debbie had the incredible opportunity to travel around the country, and by doing so she gained an education that no classroom could provide. Beyond meeting and watching the best golfers in the world compete, she encountered other world-class athletes, along with politicians, celebrities, and folks from all walks of life. She also got to work with the tour wife’s association, through which she made a direct impact on children’s hospitals, cancer research facilities, and the many other charities that receive benefits from the PGA Tour.
With that experience as a foundation, Debbie returned to school as an adult learner in 1989 and was graduated from Allentown College of St. Francis DeSales (now DeSales University) in January of 1992 with a degree in Business Communications. After taking a year off from school, she continued her education at Kutztown University, earning a Masters Degree in Public Administration in 1996. Her thesis on a new dimension to performance appraisals won the Klusarits Award for the most outstanding graduate thesis.
In the Fall of 1990, Debbie also came to work at DeSales University, where she was hired as the first full-time Director of Conference Services. After establishing that office, she moved into the ACCESS program in 1994. ACCESS is the first and most successful accelerated degree program for non-traditional students in the Lehigh Valley. Beginning as an academic advisor, she became the Associate Dean in 1999, was promoted to her current position as the Dean of Lifelong Learning in 2001 and was named to the President’s administrative cabinet in 2006. She serves on numerous committees and task forces, and in 2001 was awarded the DeSales University Professional Staff Person of the Year in. Also, in 2010, Debbie was named one of the “Women of Influence” in the Lehigh Valley.
In her current position, Debbie manages all aspects of the University’s continuing education program on each of its three campuses. She is responsible for strategic planning, curriculum innovation and program assessment, faculty recruitment and professional development, budgeting, and technology. Debbie also teaches marketing for the University’s business department.
