About Heather Schubert
Heather is a self-employed Consultant Nurse Educator in her own businesses operating under the names of Rural Emergency Care Consultants and Heather Schubert and Associates. After completing hospital based initial RN training she completed a Midwifery Certificate, Critical Care Nursing Certificate and a Diploma in Nurse Education. Subsequently she receiving a Bachelor degree in Nursing and Education from the Sturt College of Advanced Education (now Flinders University) and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Heather jump started her expansive and fulfilling career as an RN and later a staff development educator at the Royal Adelaide Hospital - where she was involved in the initial development - and later conducted - the RAH Critical Care Nursing Post Graduate Certificate. This 6 month course was later expanded by Heather into a 12 month course - which today is now a Post Graduate Diploma program of the Adelaide University.
10 years after beginning her career at Royal Adelaide Hospital Heather joined the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses where she was involved in several committee positions for 35 years including Courses Coordinator. Additionally, Heather has served as the Clinical Title Holder for the University Of Adelaide School Of Nursing, a Seminar presenter and lecturer for Ausmed Conferences, a Consultant Educator for the Australian Nursing Federation and lastly the Co-Convener Basic Life Support Instructor programs.
Heather is also the recipient of the Churchill Fellowship; a fellowship that was awarded to her in 1974 to travel across two continents and study the developments in critical care nursing and education, and an Order of Australia Medal (OAM); an award she received in 2009 for her Services to Critical Care Nursing and Education.
Over the last 4 years Heather has written a number of eLearning modules for the national ANF Continuing Education website and has taken over the conduct of BLS Instructor training for RN's in South Australia. In addition regular seminars are being conducted throughout Australia through a contract with Ausmed Education.
Some of Heather's greatest achievements include receiving recognition from her peers with an Order of Australia Medal award for services to critical care nursing and education. She set up and was in charge of the first Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and subsequently was involved in the development of the first ICU course. Her other achievements include developing and conducting BLS and ALS Instructor training, which has resulted in significantly improved standards of resuscitation-especially in rural areas.
With over 40 years of collective experience of working in the healthcare industry, with expertise in critical care nursing, nursing education, development and conduct of seminars and training programs and nurse education consultancy, and as the recipient of several honors, Heather is an accomplished, reliable and self-motivated individual.
Heather’s lifetime of commitment and dedication is recognized as being unmatched. Stemming from a desire to extend her teaching to staff in rural and smaller health care agencies Heather then initiated her move to self employment. She hopes to continue teaching and supporting other BLS and ALS Instructors to continue to make a difference to the standard of acute care nursing practice.
RECC was originally set up to provide more access to acute and care/resuscitation education for rural nurses. Over the years this has also included programs for metropolitan nurses and more recently has involved setting up and conducting BLS Instructor training after cessation of this by another professional organization. The move into presenting interstate seminars and writing web based education modules has been fantastic for Heather and has allowed her to reduce her rural traveling and to work more from her office base.
